After an off day yesterday, this morning I set another new record for distance in a 55 minute treadmill session. My weight is also continuing to move back in the right direction, so that's good. I've got six and a half weeks to get absolutely ripped for my next cabaret, and I am laser focused on getting there. Or, at least, as close to "there" as is possible. As for today's viewing? Well, it was certainly designed to put me off pizza...

Meat

Gwen's boyfriend Rhys is a manager for a cargo truck company, and this story opens with one of his drivers having been involved in a fatal crash while delivering a load of fresh meat. Of course it also turns out to be fresh alien meat, and the Torchwood Three team arrives at the crash scene to investigate. Rhys sees Gwen, but she does not see him, which leads to the entire emotional drama of the episode. He knows that Gwen has been lying to him, and after he does some of his own investigating and winds up at the warehouse where (unbeknownst to him) the alien meat is harvested, the Torchwood Three team suspects him of being involved. Oops.

So it turns out that the bad guys have a giant Space Manatee tied up in the warehouse. When I say giant, I mean about the size of a blue whale. The poor thing apparently came through the Rift when it was much smaller, and has been growing steadily in captivity ever since. Even worse, the bad guys are just systemically carving out cubes of meat from the living creature, and then packaging it up for sale with faked labels.

Gwen and Rhys finally have their "tell the truth" moment (although Gwen absolutely does not mention her affair with Owen - more on that in a bit), and then Rhys comes to the Hub for the first time and meets the team. He then participates in a raid on the warehouse, where the bad guys are taken down, the Space Manatee is put out of its misery, and Rhys gets shot. So, you know, good news all around. Once the wrap-up is complete Gwen is supposed to give Rhys some Retcon to make him forget, but she absolutely refuses and Jack concedes. So as of the end of this episode Rhys is pretty much an unofficial member of the team, and will become a much more prominent character going forward. Which is awesome, because I love Rhys a lot.

As for the thing with Gwen not confessing her affair - good for her. I am of the opinion that a person needs to keep that shit to themselves. Confessing is never about anything other than making the person who had the affair feel a little bit better about themselves, and only serves to make the cheated-upon partner feel worse. It serves no useful purpose whatsoever. Take it to your grave, and either dedicate yourself to never repeating that behavior or if you can't do that then show some common decency and leave the relationship. Seriously. (Side note to any imaginary reader who might possibly be my wife: I absolutely, positively have never had an affair. Seriously. Not even joking.) So anyway, good on Gwen for finally treating Rhys with some respect and common decency. He's a good guy. I hope you two crazy kids figure out how to make it work.
