One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

That's the trouble with heroics. They seldom run to schedule.

That's the trouble with heroics. They seldom run to schedule.

Here in the US it is Memorial Day today, so I would like to start off by taking a moment to honor the soldiers who have paid the ultimate price. I myself wore the uniform back in the late 80's, and through nothing more than pure luck I was never asked to serve in combat. I separated from the Army the same month that Iraq invaded Kuwait, and my unit went. I know that some of the men and women that I trained with at Fort Dix, Fort Eustice, and and in the 92nd Transportation Company ultimately served in the Iraq War, and I am equally certain that some of them never came home. I don't like to talk about politics here, and I am not about to start today. I will simply say that I did, in fact, take some time today to remember and honor those who have served.

But anyway, moving on to Blake's 7 and working out...

Seek-Locate-Destroy

(Blake's 7 Wiki Recap)

This one is a pretty straightforward story. Blake and the Liberator crew stage a raid on a Federation outpost in order to steal what amounts to an Enigma machine. The raid is largely successful, except that Calla gets stranded and left behind in the chaos of the raid. Meanwhile, the Federation Supreme Commander assigns the ruthless war criminal Travis to (as the title says) "Seek, locate, and destroy" Blake and the rest. Travis was there years before when Blake was previously captured, and so the two have a personal history with each other. Travis is clearly set up to be a recurring antagonist for the series. Of course ultimately Travis is outsmarted, Cally is rescued, and the Liberator flies off to it's next mission.

The happiest moment for me in watching this episode was the appearance of Peter Miles, whom you would most likely remember as the Nazi-esque Nyder in Genesis of the Daleks. He also appeared in two other Doctor Who stories and is one of my favorite character actors from that era. Sadly he passed away last year. But holy cow was it great to see him again, and a complete surprise since I am deliberately not looking ahead on this show to see who or what is coming.

I am thoroughly enjoying Blake's 7 so far. I had no idea what to expect, and this is very much Terry Nation at the top of his game. I am genuinely curious how much of Farscape was inspired by this show, as there are many surface similarities with its mysterious and powerful spaceship manned by a small crew of criminals. It is also nice to see long-form storytelling where the plot is allowed to breath and advance at a natural pace. There are action beats, sure, but Blake is by no means an action hero. If the sets are a bit wobbly and the special effects are a bit cheap, well, that's just a mark of the era in which it was created. Everyone involved seems to be giving their absolute best to create a solid drama, and it shows.

As for me, this morning I took advantage of the holiday and slept in. Then I went to the gym for a strength training workout before returning home to spend an hour on the Time Treadmill. It's funny, most days after my workout when I step on the scale I have no idea what to expect. Sometimes I feel bloated and am not surprised by the result, but then there are days like today where I weigh in significantly lower than I expected. Today I came in at 262, which means with four days left in the month I still have an outside chance of hitting my goal of weighing in under 260 by the end of the month. The five day moving average won't catch up for a bit, but the bottom line is I remain focused and and successful at making forward progress.

In an ideal world I would like to be back under 250 by the time August rolls around, but we'll see how that goes. In the first year of this ridiculous project I was primarily focused on burning fat, but now with me specifically adding muscle mass it changes the balance of things. I still have no particular target weight, and if I stayed my current weight forever I would be perfectly fine with that, but a tiny part of me still dreams of dropping down to a 38" waist. That really is just a pipe dream, though. We'll see. In any case, I am absolutely delighted to be spending my summer with Blake's 7 and my fall with Sapphire and Steel. Life is good.
