Sentient Seaweed Seeks Saxon Slaves

Ok, it's really really late and I want to go to bed. But I did watch two more episodes of Fury From the Deep this morning and I want to get this posted before I sleep. Oh, and hey, I set a new record low weight for myself today and came in at below 275 lbs for the fist time, so that was pretty cool.

Anyway, seaweed, let's talk about that.

Fury from the Deep - Episodes 3 & 4

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

The gist of the middle two episodes is that whatever it is that is animating the seaweed is also possessing humans. We knew that from Mr. Oak and Mr. Quill from the second episode, but in today's viewing we see both the lead engineer's wife and Mister One-Note Robson both get taken over as well. In fact, the end of the third episode has a very chilling scene in which the engineer's wife just walks right out into the ocean letting the waves roll over  her head. In the fourth episode there is a horrifying sequence in which the Dutch technical observer decides to go down and inspect the impeller feed pipe, and winds up being attacked by the seaweed. By the end of the fourth episode all pretenses are gone as three of the offshore drilling rigs have gone offline, and back at the main base the seaweed is forcing itself up through the gas pipeline and beginning the invasion proper.

The other key thing that happens, spread across both episodes, is that Victoria starts having second thoughts about traveling with the Doctor and Jamie. She loves them both, but she is tired of the constant danger and really just wishes for a quiet place to settle down. After the way that Dodo just kind of disappeared halfway through The War Machines and that Ben and Polly just kind of scampered off at the end of The Faceless Ones, it's nice to see a companion actually get a bit of a story arc to lead into their departure. By all means, she is also getting in a great workout with her lungs with plenty of opportunities for screaming, but it does seem like she is getting a proper send-off.

Anyway, like I said, it is late and my bed is calling. Tomorrow morning (or, really, early this morning) I will wrap up this story. I'll catch you on the other side.
