One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

I Didn't Realise Dying Heroically Was Such a Strain on the Nerves

Today has been an epic day. I started out with an hour on the Time Treadmill down in the hotel fitness center (were I garnered a few raised eyebrows from other folks working out, seeing my very-80's science fiction television program on the screen). Then I walked over to a place called Syrup for breakfast, and had the crack bacon (if you are ever in Denver, I highly recommend it). Then I attended the second day of my software development conference, an during my lunch break I recorded the new song I wrote for the show - When the Avalanche Comes. I wound up being invited to sing it during the closing session, and it was a rousing success. Then i had a lovely evening socializing with other developers, and then going out do dinner with my wife and a co-worker. All in all a very successful day.

So, about that very-80's science fiction program, let's talk about that.

Timelash - Part 2

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

Remember how yesterday I said I would not be the least bit surprised when Herbert turned out to be H.G. Wells? Well, it turns out that in fact I was not the least bit surprised when Herbert turned out to be H.G. Wells. Not exactly a shocking turn of events.

I did have one detail wrong: it wasn't the rebels that were being referred to as Moorlocks. Instead, it was the giant reptilian creatures in the caverns that were called the Morlox. Same difference. As it turns out, the bad guy Borat Borad was a scientist who became fused with one of the Morlox. On the one hand it gave him extraordinary strength and longevity. On the other hand, it turned him into a disfigured half-man half-Morlox creature whom nobody could possibly love. Yay science.

Of course in the end the Doctor does a Very Clever Thing and saves the day, whilst Herbert initially rushes in bravely to help, and subsequently regrets his decision. But it all works out in the end. The climax had a weird pacing, though. First Borad is defeated, but then the Doctor has to stop a random alien invasion that had been set up by Borad. Then Borad turns out to be not quite as dead as previously thought, before being chucked down the Timelash. It felt less like plotting, and more like throwing spaghetti against the wall to see what sticks until the clock runs out.

All in all not a terrible episode, but not particularly great.

Tomorrow morning I leave Denver and head up to Winter Park high up in the Rocky Mountains, where I will be playing in the snow for the weekend. This means no Time Treadmill for the next three days. I count that as a mercy, because bright and early Monday morning I have to face another damn Dalek story. Blech.
