One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Who: Ragnarok

Who: Ragnarok

I spent more time running today on the treadmill, which was a nice improvement after yesterday. I think I spent about six minutes at a running pace, scattered throughout the 55 minute workout. I've got a ways to go there, but it's progress. I have myself alternating days on the pushups, I am working with the 100 pushups app and am making real progress there. Other than that, today I wrote a ton of code and that's about it.

But I did watch the end of the circus story, so let's talk about that.

The Greatest Show in the Galaxy - Parts 3 & 4

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

There are two big reveals in the back half of the story, plus more than a little meta commentary on the show's fans. Let's start with the second thing first.

Along the way in the second episode, a character showed up named Whizz Kid. He pretty much looks like a Harry Potter cosplayer, a decade before the first book in that series came out. Again with the timey-wimey. In part three he gets the most screen time, and it becomes obvious that he is a proxy for what the writers think about Doctor Who fans. He goes on and on about home much he loves the Psychic Circus, has collected all the posters and other memorabilia. "Although I never got to see the early days," he laments, "I know it's not as good as it used to be but I'm still terribly interested."

There is more veiled commentary on the fans, but I will circle back to that.

The first big reveal is that one of the characters turns out to be a werewolf. Just, straight up, when the moonlight shines on her she goes all wolfy with the teeth and the fangs and the GRRRRRR!!!! It was a fun twist, well done.

The second big reveal is that the circus has been taken over and is being operated by the Gods of Ragnarok. They want to be entertained, and they are easily bored. The lone family in the big top audience? Human avatars of the three gods. The climax of the story has the Doctor entering their reality zone and entertaining them while Ace rushes off with Wolf Girl to find the MacGuffin needed to defeat Ragnarok. And again, in this sequence, there is quite a bit of not-very-subtle commentary on the Doctor Who audience.

So of course in the end the Doctor does a Very Clever Thing and defeats the bad guys, and even gets a Hollywood hero shot walking out of the big top and strolling away casually while the whole thing explodes. Funny thing about that scene: the stunt coordinators promised Sylvester McCoy that there was no danger at all, but then the explosion was much larger than they had intended. It's a wonder he didn't get singed. But it made for a great shot, and that's all that matters. Right?

This concludes the Seventh Doctor's second season. It's hard for my to wrap my head around this, but I only have six days of Classic Who left to watch. By this time next week I will be watching the 90's tv movie, and then straight on to NuWho. How wild is that?
