Today I finished my re-watch of Tom Baker's first season on BluRay. I don't have anything more to say about the story itself than I did the last time around, but I would like to talk about the location shoot for the caves of Voga. All of the underground scenes were shot at the Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset, and they are gorgeous. If I am ever back in England I would love to visit them. The caves were carved out over millions of years by an underground river, and there are signs of human habitation there dating back as far as 41,000 years ago. There is also a legend about the Witch of Wookey Hole, personified by a distinctive stalagmite in one of the chambers.

During filming the crew was specifically directed not to touch the Witch due to its archeological value, but of course some of them did. Immediately afterward the shoot was beset by a series of accidents as a result of the Curse of the Witch. Or, more likely, the large filming crew put substantially more people down in the chamber than it could safely support, which reduced the oxygen levels, which led to accidents due to oxygen deprivation. One or the other.

So, just a really neat place to film, aside from the broken legs and damaged equipment.
