One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Save your breath. You'll need it when the screaming starts.

Weird day today, workout-wise. I just couldn't drag myself out of bed early enough to get it done in the morning, so I put it off until after work. Even so, I manged over 90 push-ups today which is awesome. I expect I should be back up to 100 by next week sometime. I also wrapped up the first season of The Sarah Jane Adventures today, and it was freakin' awesome.

The Lost Boy - Parts 1 & 2

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

Oh, so many swerves in this story! First off, it seems that Luke might actually have been a "real" boy, kidnapped by the Bane five months ago, and now his real parents have finally found him. It's just plausible enough to be real, but of course it is not terribly surprising when it turns out that the parents are fakes and up to some Evil Plan.

It was somewhat more surprising when said parents turn out to be Slitheen (in what, I have been promised, is their final significant appearance in the Whoniverse). The main reason it was so surprising is that both parents were fairly thin, and there was no farting. Thank god. The reasons for that get handwaved away at some point, but the upshot is that the Slitheen are significantly less annoying in this story than they ever have been before.

Then the huge swerve comes when it turns out that Sarah Jane's supercomputer Mister Smith is actually the Big Bad, and has been plotting all along to destroy the world.

Of course in the end the day gets saved, the Slitheen are sent packing, Mister Smith is rebooted into becoming sincerely altruistic, and Luke is returned home to be with Sarah Jane.

Out of five stories in this season, three have been absolutely rock solid. I could have seen any one of them as a traditional Classic Who story, with the writing far transcending what I expected from a show aimed primarily at tweens.

Have I mentioned lately how happy I am to be rid of the grimdark stuff and to be reveling in the cheerful optimism of SJA for the holidays? I get another three weeks of this before I move on to The Class. Happy Holidays indeed!
