One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

So let's see, what did I say yesterday? " I expect tomorrow to be a slight bounce up in weight for the daily (I was definitely dehydrated this morning) but to still show another drop in the moving average." Well, guess what? I had a slight bounce up in weight this morning, but my moving average still dropped by a half a pound. It's almost like I've been doing this for over two and half years and know how my body works. Astounding! As for Doctor Who, I watched the 2009 animated story Dreamland. I wasn't especially impressed. Check out below the fold if you want to hear all about it.

Dreamland

(TARDIS Data Core Recap)

Aired during the year when David Tennant did a set of movie-length specials instead of a regular series, Dreamland is a (poorly) CGI animated adventure set in and around Roswell, New Mexico during the 1950's. The story, such as it is, involves the Doctor and two utterly forgettable temporary companions discovering and defeating a nest of insectoid aliens working in cahoots with a cardboard cutout American military officer, and rescuing a pair of sympathetic gray aliens.

The only notable thing in the entire story was the debut of the Men in Black style Alliance of Shades - a group of androids whose mission was to hide evidence of alien contact from humanity. Here they are used poorly. A year later they would appear in The Sarah Jane Adventures and be used well.

Oh, another notable thing: the part of Forgettable Female Temporary Companion was voiced by Georgia Moffat, who had appeared in Doctor Who the previous year as the titular The Doctor's Daughter, and who would go on to marry David Tennant two years later. Oh, and she is also the actual daughter of Fifth Doctor Peter Davison. One of my all-time favorite David Tennant quotes is when he was asked about being a Doctor, and having another Doctor as a father-in-law, to which Tennant replied, "Yes, well, it is rather statistically unlikely..."

Getting back to Dreamland, the animation is horrid. It might as well have been stick figure animation, as all of the characters are just bad CGI renders with no range of expression and no physical weight in the world they inhabit. Even in 2009 it was crap animation. Combine that with a tired and predicable story, and the whole thing was a complete waste of time.

Tomorrow, at least, should be interesting. I am rewinding to 2003's Scream of the Shalka featuring Richard E. Grant as the original-but-now-non-canonical Ninth Doctor two years before Christopher Eccleston came along to claim the role in the modern series relaunch. I've never seen it, and I have high hopes.
