One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Day Off

Yeah, sorry, I just couldn't bring myself to get out of bed early this morning and hit the treadmill.

Unlike Idiots We Ideate

This morning when I started my scheduled pushup program, I knew there was no way I would hit the targets. It was a flatly ridiculous notion that I could do 88 pushups. And then... I did 88 pushups! So that was a nice way to start my day. Unfortunately, I got started on that so late that I had to put off my treadmill time until almost 9pm.

But I got it done, so let's talk about it.

Those Aren't Tears of Joy

Those Aren't Tears of Joy

Everybody has pet peeves that matter to them but seemingly to nobody else. For me, right near the top of the list is any title that uses the construction "Rise of the (fill in the blank)". It ranks right up there with the phrase "the one that started it all" and with song lyrics about tall mountains and wide rivers. I can't tell you precisely why those things annoy me. I mean, sure, they are all lazy and trite, but there are plenty of lazily trite phrases in the world that don't bother me at all. But give me a story that starts with "Rise of the..." and you have already lost me.

So you can imagine how I felt when, in order to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first appearance of the Cybermen, Doctor Who went with Rise of the Cybermen for the story title. *shudder*  So let's talk about that.

I'm the Doctor, and I Just Snogged Madame de Pompadour

I'm the Doctor, and I Just Snogged Madame de Pompadour

This morning I weighed in under 250 lbs again for the first time in eleven days, and actually at my lowest weight in more than twenty. Of course, it was also after not only an hour on the treadmill but another hour out doing yard work, so I was more than a little dehydrated. We'll see if tomorrow continues the happy trend.

In other news, I watched one of my very favorite episodes of Doctor Who this morning and loved every minute of it. So let's talk about that.

The Missus and the Ex. Welcome to Every Man's Worst nightmare.

The Missus and the Ex. Welcome to Every Man's Worst nightmare.

In yesterday's post I mentioned that my wife and I had visited Balmoral Castle in Scotland a few years ago. It turns out that I am a moron (shocking, I know!) The place I was thinking of was Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, which is a completely different thing. I was only off by about a hundred miles. Oops.

As for today's viewing, it featured the return of both Sarah Jane Smith and K9. Yay! Let's talk about that.

Check it out - after hitting sixty pushups last week I kind of hit a brick wall. The next day of the program naturally had more per set, and my arms fatigued before I could finish. It took repeating that same day's program three times until today I finally broke back through, the end result being I hit sixty four pushups today. Barely. I expect the next day's program is going to be the same fight all over again, but I'll deal with that then. Progress is progress.

I also watched Doctor Who get all werewolf-y this morning, so let's talk about that.

New New Freaky Friday

New New Freaky Friday

I ain't gonna lie, I am bothered by my current weight trend. I can argue to a certain degree that I am putting on more muscle mass, but not that much. The fundamental problem is that I have plateaued, but I am committed to finishing this ridiculous project so I am pretty much chained to the treadmill for about another four months. I am going to try to find some ways to work in some other variety, but it's kind of hard with my schedule the way it is. Hopefully I will be able to turn this thing around and stabilize.

As for Doctor Who, the Tenth Doctor kicks off his first full season with a rough start. So let's talk about that.

That's All I Needed, a Good Cup of Tea!

Merry Christmas! Now that I am into the modern series, it will be Christmas roughly every two weeks for the next few months. Cheerful! I am in the midst of a run-up to a software release, so I've been buried in code all day. I don't have much time to spend on this one.

But I did spend seventy minutes on the treadmill this morning watching the 2005 Children in Need special and then the Tenth Doctor's inaugural adventure. So let's talk about that.

I Can See the Whole of Time and Space, Every Single Atom of Your Existence, and I Divide Them

Today has been a lovely, lovely day. Work-wise I have a software release going out tomorrow, and by quitting time today I had effectively cleared out my bug list. Theatre-wise I got some very good casting news today, and it's something I'll probably be talking a lot about in a couple months. I spent more than a little time doing a happy dance around my home office. This evening my wife and I went out for a celebratory dinner, and had a delicious Indian meal. I am a very satisfied boy right now.
