NoWho Mar 16 2018 I skipped the treadmill today. It was a huge push to get through the end of Classic Who, and now that I made it I really needed a day off. I'll be back at it tomorrow. Read more ...
I Am Groot Mar 15 2018 9th Doctor Rose Tyler Today has just been a roller coaster from start to finish. Nothing truly awful, just a plethora of frustrations mixed with some pretty cool stuff. Focusing on the positive: I was offered a role in another show, which was very flattering, but I had to turn it down because the dates conflicted with the show I am doing at Orlando Fringe this year. As problems go, turning down a really awesome show because I am already doing a different really awesome show is a pretty good one to have.I have an audition on Monday for yet another show, and hopefully that will go well. I also took my guitar to a luthier today to have it re-fretted, so for the next week or so I have my emergency backup guitar. Which, after years of playing one specific instrument, it just doesn't feel right to have a different one in my hands. The tone is all wrong. But again, focusing on the awesome, a week from now I will have my good guitar back in my hands and it will play beautifully. So that's pretty cool, too. As for the other frustrations of the day, well, they will pass. It's all good. But my day started off with Doctor Who, and that's always awesome. So let's talk about that. Read more ...
Lots of Planets Have a North! Mar 14 2018 8th Doctor 9th Doctor Jackie Tyler Mickey Smith Rose Tyler And here we are. After three hundred and eighty seven days on the Time Treadmill, I have finally arrived in the twenty first century with NuWho. It hardly seems possible. For me it was only two days ago that I said goodbye to the classic series, but those forty eight hours represent a sixteen-year jump from 1989 to 2005. It's a whole new world. But before I dove into the Ninth Doctor, I decided to spend an extra seven minutes with the Eighth Doctor. So let's talk about them both. Read more ...
Now With Car Chases and Kissing. Dear God, the Kissing... Mar 13 2018 8th Doctor Grace Halloway This morning was my second-longest duration on the Time Treadmill in one go, trailing behind The Five Doctors by one minute. From here on out it is all either standard 45 minute stories, or else the Christmas and other specials that all run at a straight 50 minutes. I do not expect to ever be on the treadmill again for this ridiculous project for as long as I was this morning. Which is nice. This morning also marked the end of twentieth century content for this project. Tomorrow morning I jump ahead nine years to 2005. But that's tomorrow. For today, let's talk about the curiously American interpretation of Doctor Who. Read more ...
Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea's getting cold! Mar 12 2018 7th Doctor Ace I ain't gonna lie: I teared up a bit at 7:37 am when I reached the closing credits of the final episode of the Classic Who era. In one way it feels like I have been doing this ridiculous project forever, and in another it seems like only yesterday that I stepped on the Time Treadmill and said hello to Susan, Ian, Barbara, and the Doctor for the first time. I still have about another four months to go before I complete the entire project, but to day was a huge milestone. As of this morning I can say with absolute certainty that I have watched every single episode of Doctor Who that has ever been broadcast (including the lost episodes, in the form of reconstructions). Along the way I have completely transformed my body and my health. That's no small thing. As for this last story, well, it was a bit of a disappointment. So let's talk about that. Read more ...
Warning: Dangerous Undercurrents Mar 11 2018 7th Doctor Ace Wow. Just... wow. I couldn't treadmill this morning because Reasons, and so I had to put it off until this evening. I just finished, and I am completely stunned by the ending to The Curse of Fenric. Honestly, I could never watch another episode of Doctor Who again and I would be perfectly satisfied with this as my last memory of the show. It was really that good. So let's talk about that. Let the Chains of Fenric Shatter Mar 10 2018 7th Doctor Ace Two weeks ago I added pushups to my workout routine, using an app called 100 Pushups. I had tried using it a couple years ago, but couldn't even do a regular pushup. I had to do modified pushups with my knees on the ground. It was pathetic and embarrassing, and I gave up (probably too quickly). Oddly enough, losing sixty pounds makes doing regular pushups quite a bit easier. Even so, on the first day of this new attempt I could barely do three. This morning I did thirty four. It remains to be seen if I will achieve the 100 pushups in six weeks promised by the program, but so far it is going well. As I told my wife this morning, give me four months and a Hollywood budget and I'll go all Chris Pratt on you. From zero to hero only takes a few months, a few million dollars, a squadron of personal trainers and nutritionists, and no day job or other responsibilities... Anyway, I also started watching the next-to-last Classic Who story this morning. It's a good'n. Let's talk about that. Read more ...
Scratch the Victorian Veneer and Something Nasty'll Come Crawling Out Mar 09 2018 7th Doctor Ace Today was a longer-than-usual day on the treadmill. The next story was a three-parter, but where last season had the two three-parters back-to-back so I could just watch them together in three days, this season goes 4-3-4-3. So I decided to watch today's story in its entirety, and I will do the same on Monday. That means today I went for 80 minutes, and walked nearly six miles. Oh, and then I did 28 pushups. So, a bit of a workout today. As for for the story, it was a good one. So let's talk about that. Read more ...
Happy International Women's Day Mar 08 2018 7th Doctor Ace Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart The BBC official Doctor Who twitter account sent out this amazing image today celebrating International Women's Day. They have done these in years past as well, but how cool is it to have Jodie Whittaker right there at the center if this year's photo? I also liked that they included the TARDIS in the photo, because she is definitely a woman as well. In other upcoming news, I saw today that Alan Cumming is going to be appearing in an episode of the new series as King James I. How cool is that? In other news, I watched the rest of Battlefield this morning, but I don't have much to say about it. Let's get it done. Read more ...
Any Advanced Form of Magic is Indistinguishable from Technology Mar 07 2018 7th Doctor Ace Back in the mid-80's DC comics broke new ground in the comic book industry. launching several new limited-run event series with much more complex and mature themes than were previously common. Some of those titles, like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, are still considered classics and landmarks of the art form. Prior to those two, the very first "maxi-series", was a twelve issue story by Mike Barr and Brian Bolland called Camelot 3000. I bought every issue of that thing as they came out and ate it up. The premise was an alien invasion all wrapped up in Arthurian legend, with all of the key characters reborn again a futuristic backdrop. These days the series is largely forgotten (probably deservedly so), but I thought of it again this morning as I watched the first half of Battlefield. So let's talk about that. Read more ...
