One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Disgruntled Teenagers with Ray Guns

Oy, such a day. I barely made the treadmill today. Even the support of you, my imaginary readers, almost wasn't enough. What pushed me there was the fact that I am two days away from a complete month of walks/viewings/posts every single day. So I dragged my sorry butt on down to the YMCA and watched the end of The Space Museum. Turns out William Hartnell pretty much had the same issue, and didn't bother to come to work for the first week. But he showed up for the finale, and so did Boba Fett. For reals.

Let's talk about that.

The Search / The Final Phase

Big piece of trivia: actor Jeremy Bulloch, best known for his portrayal as Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, appears in this story as the Xeron rebel leater Tor. He is a bit feckless at first, what with being a disgruntled teenager and all, but by the time the revolution truly begins he is right there leading the fight. Also, he doesn't end up being bumped into a giant worm pit, so that's nice.

"Some day I'm gonna be the most bad-ass bounty hunter in the galaxy!"

Pretty much all of the leads in the story wind up being separated, and ultimately reunited for the climax. Vicki spends her time cosplaying as Katniss Everdeen, whipping the Xeron boys into fighting shape, and outsmarting the lock on the armory so that the rebellion has ray guns. Barbara spends her time nearly being gassed to death in the museum, and in turn rescuing another of the rebels. Ian is captured, escapes, is recaptured, and escapes again. Along the way he rescues the Doctor, who spends the entire running time of The Search as a popsicle being prepped to become a museum exhibit.

In the end the rebellion is a success, the Moroks are defeated, the Doctor and companions avoid spending the rest of eternity hanging out in glass cases on display, and we find out that the whole thing was set into motion by the Daleks, who have built their own time machine in order to pursue and exterminate the Doctor.

Also, significantly, behind the scenes this was the story where Jacqueline Hill decided it was time for her to leave the show. Only one more story, and we will be saying goodbye to Ian and Barbara forever. I fear that I am not going to love a female companion as much until Sarah Jane Smith arrives on the scene, and that's a loooong way away.
