One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Thesis: David Mitchell Is a Time Lord

Thesis: David Mitchell Is a Time Lord

First off, huge headline:  THIS MORNING I WEIGHED IN AT MORE THAN 30 LBS LESS THAN WHEN i STARTED THIS PROJECT!

After the better part of a week of frustration, banging my head against the barrier of getting below 280 lbs, this morning I weighed in at a record low 276.5. This was due in no small part to having spent two consecutive days walking around Walt Disney World with my autistic son in 95°+ weather, in addition to the daily treadmill time. You'd better believe that I am taking the win. On top of that, I found out over the weekend that I got a callback for a professional theatrical production that I auditioned for. I am a very happy boy indeed.

So anyway, Doctor Who... I did watch the final two episodes of The Ice Warriors this morning and made an astonishing discovery.

Let's talk about that.

The Ice Warriors - Episodes 5 & 6

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

There is a supporting character in the story, a scientist named Penley, who had appeared several times in the earlier episodes but took on a significant role in the last two parts. His character is a scientist who resigned his post after butting heads with the robotically-administrative Leader Clent. He spent most of the story off hanging out with the Scavengers, but in the final confrontation his scientific knowledge and passion comes to the forefront and is key in ultimately defeating the titular ice warriors. But the really interesting thing about Penley is that... I swear he is played by David Mitchell, of Peep Show and That Mitchell and Webb Look fame.

Left: Peter Sallis, Right: David Mitchell

I'm not even joking. Same face, same voice, same mannerisms. I looked up the actor fully expecting it to be a time-traveling David Mitchell. What I discovered was even more astounding: The actor is Peter Sallis, who is probably best known globally as being the voice of Wallace in all of the excellent Wallace and Grommit shorts. He was also the star of Last of the Summer Wine, a British sitcom that I had never even heard of, and yet it ran continuously from 1973 until 2010 with an incredible 295 episodes.  I gather that Sallis has since retired from acting, being currently 96 years old. All I will say is: If David Mitchell ever wants to do a movie where he visits himself a half century in the future, he should give Peter Sallis a ring. I bet they would get along swimmingly.

Getting back to The Ice Warriors, well no great surprises there but still a quite enjoyable story. In the end the ice warriors are defeated, as in one location the Doctor repurposes a sonic weapon to stun the warriors and back at the base Penley uses quick thinking and decisiveness to put the warriors on the run and to combat the approaching glacier and save the world. It's all quite stirring stuff.

Tomorrow I start The Enemy of the World, and I am really looking forward to it. It is one of the two stories that were only very recently recovered back in 2013, and it features Patrick Troughton not only as the Doctor but also as an evil scientist/politician named Salamander. Oh, such good times in store for the next three days!
