One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

There Are Seeds. They Cause Death.

There Are Seeds. They Cause Death.

Good news! The Doctor totally didn't die in a horrible rocket crash at the beginning of the third episode of The Seeds of Death. I was so worried, I thought maybe it was the end of the series. Fortunately, at the last moment the cliffhanger was resolved and the Doctor (along with Jamie and Zoe) landed safely on the moon.

Let's talk about that.

The Seeds of Death - Episodes 3 & 4

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

Finally, halfway into the story, the Doctor finally knows that there are Ice Warriors about, and of course he sets out to defeat them. Unfortunately, due to Patrick Troughton's vacation plans, the Doctor gets a face-full of an exploding Ice Warrior seed pod near the end of episode three, and spends the entirety of episode four unconscious and played by a body double. Meanwhile, the Ice Warriors begin to execute their plan, which involves transporting seed pods to T-Mat stations all around Earth's northern hemisphere (where it is currently winter, and thus cool enough for the Ice Warriors to survive). Anyone too close to a pod when it germinates is immediately killed by way of oxygen deprivation. The pods release a mist which spreads a nasty white foam that generates more pods, which continue erupt.

While the Doctor is sidelined, Jamie and Zoe work with the surviving moon base personnel to try to take out the Ice Warriors by turning up the heat. Unfortunately, just after she finally gets the thermostat cranked up to maximum Zoe is cornered by an Ice Warrior and is surely about to die. Roll credits!

One thing this story continues to do well is to set up a believable global threat with millions of lives on the line, while remaining set in two constrained locations. The vast majority of Second Doctor stories are some variation on "base under siege", and this is no different but with all of humanity at risk. It's good, good stuff.

Tomorrow morning comes the big finish, I can hardly wait.
