One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

One Million Steps

This morning I hit a huge milestone - as of today I have taken more than one million steps on the treadmill for this project. I've got another big milestone coming later in the week, but I will save that for Thursday. Also, I have to say... in the past week or so I have noticed something else: for the first time I am looking in the mirror and seeking Skinny Me instead of Fat Me. Sure, I have more excess body fat to lose, but for the very first time in nearly two decades I do not see myself in the mirror and immediately compare my own gut to my father's tremendous beer gut. So that's pretty nice. Also, as one might suspect, I watched two more episodes of The Claws of Axos

Let's talk about that.

The Claws of Axos - Episodes 3 & 4

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

At the beginning of the third episode, both the Doctor and Jo are captured by the Axons and taken back to the Axos ship and held prisoner. Of course in the fourth episode they escape (largely due to a surprising assist by the Master) when the ship is being overloaded by a power surge. Now, I'm not saying that Jo's skirt is extremely short, I will just point out that during the chaos as the Doctor pulls Jo from a nest of tentacles, I saw both London and France.

There is a great scene in which the Master enters the Doctor's TARDIS only to find the console torn to pieces with wires and cables hanging everywhere. The Master is disgusted by the state of things, and then shrugs and starts putting it all back together (not because he is a nice guy, of course, but because he intents to steal it). It's a fun moment, and also notable for being the first time since The War Games that we have seen the inside of the TARDIS.

After escaping Axos the Doctor pretends to abandon the Earth and all of his UNIT friends by teaming up with the Master to escape the imminent destruction. Of course it turns out to be a ruse, and he makes use of the Master's knowledge in order to trap the Axons in a time loop. Also of course, the Master escapes to freedom in his own TARDIS while the Doctor tries to escape as well. Unfortunately, the Time Lords have locked up his TARDIS to always return to Earth. The Doctor's exile continues.

I have to say I really enjoyed this story. I liked the design of Axos (the Axon ship, although that is a misnomer because the Axons are all truly just parts of Axos spun off temporarily into independent units). The ship itself resembles a lamprey, which is a great visual metaphor. The different versions of the Axons are also really great, whether they be the seemingly-friendly golden men or the horrifyingly-tentacled shambling monsters. Sure, they all look cheap in that classic 70's science fiction way, but I always love it when Doctor Who's reach exceeds its grasp.

Tomorrow, the Doctor finally leaves the Earth for the first time in two years. I am really looking forward to this one - Colony in Space happens to be one of the first novelizations I ever read from the series, at least a year before I finally managed to see any TV episodes. So this one is a weird instance where I have never seen it, but I already know the story. It should be interesting to watch.
