One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Sorry 'Bout Your Coccyx, Jo

I love Vegas, I love coming here every summer for Virtuoso Travel Week, but the huge downside is food. It's just so good, and there are so many dinners with so many friends and co-workers it is nearly impossible to eat light. Which is awesome, but even with all of the walking I do it is almost impossible not to put on some weight while I am here. This past month has been a struggle anyway, and this really isn't helping on that front. But hey, I will surely get back on track when I get home, right? Right?!? I also watched two more episodes of Doctor Who today.

Let's talk about that.

The Time Monster - Episodes 3 & 4

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

You know how sometimes the six-parters tend to sag a bit in the middle? Welcome to the useless middle bit of The Time Monster. From a storytelling standpoint the third episode could have been skipped entirely and had no affect on the plot whatsoever. It primarily consisted with the Master randomly summoning soldiers from different time periods in order to delay the arrival of Captain Yates and the UNIT squad by a few minutes. Literally nothing useful happened in the entire episode.

The fourth episode at least had a few interesting ideas, with the Doctor's TARDIS materializing inside the Master's, and yet the Master's TARDIS was also inside the Doctor's in a weird non-Euclidean feedback loop. Unfortunately that fun little oddity was buried under an endless cycle of "witty banter" between the Doctor and the Master across a video link. At one point Jo Grant is knocked on her keister by some TARDIS turbulence, at which point both Time Lords apologize to her for bruising her coccyx. Really.

The good news is, the Doctor is killed at the end of the episode by being dumped outside into the time vortex, from which he will surely never be saved. Very shortly after that, both Jo and the TARDIS are also dumped into the void, which mercifully means the story is over, right?

Sadly, no. There are two more episodes to watch tomorrow, and I hope to God they are a vast improvement over today's viewing.
