One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

The Sword of Damocles

The Sword of Damocles

You know, it's kinda funny: every time I start to get frustrated by lack of progress, thinking maybe I have finally hit the brick wall and I have arrived at my destination size, then something like the last two days happen where I have a sudden drop. Although I weighed in slightly higher today than yesterday, which was not unexpected, that "slightly higher" was still much lower than anything prior to yesterday. I think I really do have a fighting chance at being in the 240's by Christmas. How cool is that?

Also, I finished my current Doctor Who story today. I have don't have much to say about it, but let's get this done.

Underworld - Parts 3 & 4

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

I have come to the conclusion that I don't remember anything about this story either because I actually never watched it back in the day, or else I did watch it and it bored me so much I actively erased it from my memory. Either one is equally likely. I was hoping that things would pick up in the back half, but tragically that was not to be. The entire thing is a riff on the Greek legend of Jason and the Quest for the Golden Fleece, and not even subtly so. In the last scene the Doctor accidentally calls one character Jason when their name is Jackson, and then he goes on to tell Leela about the Greek legend. It was like the writers didn't even trust their own analogies to stand on their own.

Ultimately there was a prerequisite psychotic computer that had begun to think of itself as a god, guarding the Golden Fleece Genetic Databank, and said computer is hoist upon its own petard when it gets blown up by the thermonuclear bombs it had tried to trick our heroes into taking with them. All of the slaves get rescued, and all of the evil overlords get blown up with the computer and the planet. Woo hoo.

I guess I would mind less if the story was actively bad. Instead, it was just mediocre. There were the nuggets of a few good ideas in there, and some potentially interesting characters, but nothing ever really paid off. It just felt like everyone was going through the motions to get through the story and move along to the next one.

The only bright news is, tomorrow's story is actually a good one, with the return of the Sontarans and a whole bunch of new Gallifreyan mythology. So that will be nice.
