One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

I'll Explain Later

I'll Explain Later

It's been a productive day today. In addition to my regular workout, we got the master bedroom completely cleared out, put a fresh coat of paint all around, ripped out the carpet and padding, and sealed the subfloor. Tomorrow morning I start laying down the new hardwood floor. Oh, and on top of that we went out and finally saw the new Star Wars movie (it was aight, dog). But before I can go to bed I need to talk about the back half of the current Doctor Who story.

So let's talk about that.

Time-Flight parts 3 & 4

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

With the Master revealed at the end of part 2, the second half of the story pretty much comes down to "the Master needs this MacGuffin to fix his own TARDIS, and the Doctor has to negotiate with him". There is some folderol about some ancient race called the Xeraphin whose planet was destroyed, and the survivors all melded into a single very powerful hive entity. There is also some other folderol with a Concorde jet able to take off without a paved runway. On top of that, there are at least three times where, rather than explaining some plot detail or mechanic, the Doctor just waves his hands and says, "I'll explain later."

So, yeah, the second half of the story does not hold up as well as the first half. It's still not actively bad, certainly not in Planet of Giants or Kill the Moon territory, but not that great either. It's not even my least favorite story of this season (I"m looking at you, Four to Doomsday).

In the end the Doctor does a Very Clever Thing that sends the Master off to the Xeraphin homeworld with a broken TARDIS, and finally gets Tegan back to Heathrow for her flight. By all appearances, this should have been Tegan's last story. That won't last, though. She's stuck with the Fifth Doctor right up to the end.

That's all I got for tonight. I'll be hitting the treadmill early tomorrow and then spending all day installing a floor. Wish me luck.
