One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Less Barber of Seville, More Sweeny Todd

Less Barber of Seville, More Sweeny Todd

Whatever the heck I did to my right arm, it doesn't seem to be improving much. It feels like I tweaked a nerve, and depending on what I am doing and how long since my last dose of ibuprofen, it is either mostly ok or else all tingly and muscle-achy and my right index finger goes numb. So that's not a good sign. If it hasn't radically improved by Monday morning I may have to make a trip to Urgent Care. So that's nice.

On the upside, I got to spend an hour this morning with My Doctor, the Second (and best). So let's talk about that.

The Two Doctors -Part 2

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

The middle third of the story splits its time about fifty/fifty between Two and Six, which is really nice. Six and Peri find Jamie on the space station, and after Six does a kind of mind-meld with Two he recognizes the sound of Santa Maria -- the largest of the bells in the Great Cathedral of Seville. From there the rest of the episode takes place in and around an  estate just outside of Seville.

The mad scientist is convinced that there is some kind of symbiotic link between Time Lords and the TARDISes, which is partially true but not quite in the way he believes. In any case, he has Two strapped down to a table and is preparing to take him apart piece by piece until he finds that link.

Meanwhile, the Sontarans stomp around in their usual blustery manner and being very Sontaran-ish, demanding that the scientist get to work and produce results so that they can get back to the war effort against the Rutans.

Also meanwhile, Six (along with Jamie and Peri) arrive in Seville and happen upon a British lepidopterist and his Spanish girlfriend, who very helpfully direct our heroes to the local hacienda where they think they heard an airplane crash but which Six recognizes as being the landing of the Sontaran ships. Six and Jamie break into the ice house where they think Two is being held, while Peri goes on a scouting mission to the hacienda, posing as an American student researching places for other vacationing students to visit.

By the cliffhanger Two is still a prisoner, Six and Jamie are discovered by the Sontarans, and Peri is being hunted for meat by the male Androgum who spends all of his time obsessing over food. Make no mistake, actress Nicola Bryant has very much been treated by the writers and costumers as a tasty morsel to be presented to the viewers at home, but this turn of events is a bit more aggressive than expected. It looks like she is headed for the dinner pot.

It wasn't a bad episode by any means, but it does feel like perhaps it was stretched a bit to make this story a three-parter. I get it, another multi-Doctor story should be an event, but the plot really needs a bit more meat on its bones. So to speak.

And that's it, I am going to go soak my arm in a hot tub and take more drugs. Hopefully tomorrow it will magically be all better.
