One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Then where will you be, eh? Dead. No, worse than that. Poor.

Then where will you be, eh? Dead. No, worse than that. Poor.

The good news: second consecutive day back under 250. The bad news: the five day trend is still moving upwards. Even if tomorrow is a good day, the five day will probably still push upwards unless tomorrow is extraordinarily good (it won't be). I don't have a prayer of actually losing weight collectively with the Sixth Doctor. By my last day with him on Tuesday I will likely be back where I was when I finished the Fourth Doctor, effectively negating both Five and Six. The thing is, this was never exactly about weight. I mean, I'd be lying if I didn't say I would still like to get all the way down to 220 at least, but at the end of the day this ridiculous project has been about me feeling better overall and I most certainly have achieved that. Or am I just trying to convince myself? Hard to say.

In other news, I watched two more episodes on the treadmill this morning and was pleasantly surprised. Let's talk about that.

The Trial of a Time Lord - Parts 5 & 6 (A.K.A. Mindwarp - Parts 1 & 2)

(TARDIS Data Core page for The Trial of a Time LordTARDIS Data Core recap for Mindwarp)

The stupid Space Trial continues, and it's still stupid. But at least it interrupts the plot less often. The next adventure that the Valyard presents to the court is also the Doctor's last adventure with Peri, and one that he doesn't completely remember. It also features the return of the repulsive reptilian alien vulture capitalist Sil, last seen in Vengeance on Varos. Best of all, it features a guest turn by that greatest of 80's British overactors, Brian Blessed. You just can't go wrong with him stomping around and chewing up the scenery.

As for the plot, the TARDIS materializes on Thoros Beta where the Doctor is trying to trace the source of a dangerous advanced weapon that he found on another planet with some less technologically advanced warlords. He fears (justifiably so) that someone (Sil) is selling high technology to lesser planets without regard to safety. What the Doctor and Peri find is a nightmare of genetic manipulation being run by humanoid scientist Crozier at the behest of Sil's superior Kiv. It turns out Kiv is dying because his brain is swelling, too large for his skull to contain, and Crozier intends to save Kiv by swapping his brain into another body.

There are more twists and turns than that, but that's the gist. Much like the previous story with the egocentric robot, Kiv has ensured that if he dies then everyone dies. Along the way the Doctor gets partially zapped by the brain transfer device, and it seems to have made him completely not himself. He betrays Peri, even chains her to some rocks on the beach and threatens to let her drown if she doesn't confess to some paranoid delusion.

As I say, it is surprisingly good. I went into this whole season with extremely low expectations. Even after enjoying the first segment by Robert Holmes, I still went into today's viewing with trepidation, not realizing that it was written by the same guy who wrote Vengeance on Varos -- which in retrospect seems blindingly obvious what with the return of Sil. So cool, I keep being pleasantly surprised. Now I am expecting equally good things for at least the next four days of viewing.

Here's hoping.
