One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Love's Labours Won

It was a beautiful day today. I slept in, did some sit-ups, walked on the treadmill, went to the Magic Kingdom with my son, and just generally enjoyed a lovely Florida spring day. What more could a person ask for?

So let's talk Doctor Who so I can go to bed.

The Shakespeare Code

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

Martha's first trip in the TARDIS takes her to William Shakespeare's second appearance on the show (he last appeared briefly in the first episode of The Chase when Barbara Write, Goddess, used the Time and Space Visualizer to see him creating Hamlet). Writer Gareth Roberts is a total Shakespeare geek, and peppers the story with so many quotes, nods, and references that it is virtually impossible to catch them all. It is done deftly, though, and it makes for a charming episode.

The Sainted Rose gets name-dropped and referenced several times, and manages to box out Martha in a bed with the Doctor without even being there. How's that for staying power?  At least Martha learns right away that having a crush on Ten will get her precisely nowhere.

The plot involves three witches (actually alien Carrionites) who use the Bard in order to cast a spell that will open a portal to where their species in imprisoned and unleash them upon the world. In the end The Doctor Shakespeare does a Very Clever Thing by writing an impromptu incantation in iambic pentameter in order to send them packing back to their prison dimension. Oh, and Queen Elizabeth shows up at the end, recognizes the Doctor, and is furious with him for some unknown reason (which will be ultimately revealed in The Day of the Doctor).

As I say, it's a fun episode. The period costumes and sets are beautiful, the dialog is quick and clever, and Martha continues to be awesome. There's a reason Series Three is my absolute favorite period of NuWho.
