One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

The LobsterFish of Venice

The LobsterFish of Venice

Today is going to be a really short post. It's the week of the Orlando Fringe Festival, I've got a show in it, and I need to go flog it like crazy to get butts in seats. But I did put in my treadmill time this morning, so let's talk about Amy getting all freaky up in the TARDIS.

The Vampires of Venice

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

At the end of the last episode, Amy finally fessed up to the Doctor that the night she ran off with him she was about to get married to Rory the next morning. Which, cool. Except she's kind of freaking out about it, and decides that the only rational thing to do is to have sexy sexy times with the 900-year-old alien standing in front of her. Which, as I have mentioned before: ew. On the upside, this time around the Doctor actually agrees with this sentiment.

So today's story consists of the Doctor rushing off to Rory's bachelor party, popping out of a cake, saying some awkward things, and then dragging Amy and Rory out for a romancing date in sixteenth century Venice. Good plan, aside from the vampires.

Of course the vampires turn out to be alien LobsterFish who traveled to Earth through one of the cracks in the universe before being stranded there. This means that writer Toby Whithouse gets to have fun playing around with various vampire mythology and then waving it away with some WhateverTechnology. It's pretty fun. Also fun: the scene where the Doctor encounters the first batch of buxom VampireHotties.

That was actually the very first scene I ever saw with Matt Smith as the Doctor, it was released about a month before his season began. It was also the moment when I knew that I was going to be perfectly happy with Smith in the role.

Ultimately the VampireHotties get blown up by a grieving father with several barrels of gunpowder conveniently stored in his home, the secondary LobsterFish baddie is killed by Amy while rescuing Rory in some kind of weird roman ting bonding moment (no, I said bonding not bondage - that will come later), and the primary LobsterFish MommaBaddie feeds herself to her fishy offspring swimming around in the Venetian canals. So, you know, a happy ending.

I liked this story just fine. I particularly liked the fact that Rory, being a very reluctant companion, spends most of his time not drinking the kool-aid and therefore giving the Doctor some very pointed observations on how TARDIS traveling companions are manipulated and mistreated. Which, he's not wrong.

Today was kind of a rough workout, though. I didn't sleep well last night, so I skipped the push-ups and I have to say the fifty five minutes on the treadmill knocked me flat. And now I am about to go out to a huge counterculture theatrical festival and spend all night busking and begging people to come see my show. God, I hope I get a decent night's sleep tonight.
