One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

So the Tardis has dresses and likes a bit of trouble? Yeah, I think I'm low-key in love with her.

Oh, such a Sunday this was. I had the closing performance of the stage show I have been in, and it was a doozy. Due to the lead becoming extremely ill during the performance (but not while onstage, thankfully), the whole thing went sideways about halfway through. It made for a memorable live performance, anyway. As for Doctor Who, I did indeed watch a new episode.

So let's talk about that.

Thin Ice

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

I wrote briefly about this episode last year when it first aired, and my opinion hasn't much changed. The story follows on directly from the end of Smile, with the TARDIS arriving in London in 1814 during the final Frost Fair. The Thames is frozen completely over, there are mysterious lights under the ice, and there is something sinister going on. Mostly this is Bill's chance to get a primer on how time travel works (basically, don't think about it too hard). There is a giant serpent chained beneath the Thames who produces an oil that is an extremely valuable and powerful fuel source. The Sutcliffe family has kept it chained there for generations in secret, and periodically sacrifice humans to feed the beast and keep the fuel coming. Apparently the creature itself causes the river to ice over periodically, and thus when it is eventually freed at the end that is why there were no longer any frost fairs.

On the whole it is a perfectly enjoyable episode, and Bill makes for a charming companion. There's a bit of aggressive commentary on racism, which is nice to see addressed in context.  Other than that I don't have much to say about it.

So I guess this is a short one. Sorry.
