After intending to take two days off during a work trip, I wound up skipping four days of workouts. I fully expected to have ballooned up to a grotesque weight, and was pleasantly surprised to have only swollen up to an offensive weight. So that's..... nice?
Out of Time
(TARDIS Data Core recap)
This story is unique in that it features no antagonist of any kind, no enemy to fight or threat to overcome. Instead it is a quiet character story that particularly focuses on and develops Owen, Jack, and Gwen. The gist of the plot is that the Rift causes a little timey-wimey wormhole thingy to open up, through which travels a small airplane from 1953 to slip through to Cardiff in 2006 with the pilot and two passengers on board. The story follows the three of them as they try to make some sense of their new surroundings, as well as how their experience influences three of the Torchwood Three crew (Ianto and Tosh pretty much get the week off, it seems).
As Jack bonds with passenger John, a middle-aged gentleman, it finally gives some much-needed character growth for the show's lead. We finally get a little bit of a peek at how his apparent immortality has effected him emotionally. With John there is also another powerful scene in which he finds his only son, now an old man suffering from the advanced stages of Alzheimer's, and that scene very much informs his ultimate decision to kill himself. Strong stuff.
Meanwhile, Owen also continues his rocky road towards trying to be an actual decent human being by becoming romantically involved with pilot Diane Holmes. What starts out as a typical Owen sexual hookup turns into genuine love. Which of course becomes all the more heartbreaking in the end, when Diane decides to fly away back through the Rift leaving an emotionally crushed Owen behind in her wake.
Finally, Gwen befriends the final passenger -- a virginal eighteen-year-old girl named Emma. On the upside, Emma is the only one of the three who ultimately tries to make a life in her newfound reality, having accepted a job in London. On the downside, before she goes she unintentionally becomes the catalyst that begins to fracture Gwen's relationship with her boyfriend Rhys. Gwen keeping secrets from him because of Torchwood is a serious threat to their succeeding as a couple, and I really hope those crazy kids work it out. (They totally do, because Rhys is amazing and deserves a medal for Best Boyfriend in the World.)
So that's two stories in a row with no real action and definitely no bloodshed, one more on the comedic end and the other very much on the dramatic. That ends with tomorrow's episode, which leads into the two part season finale. Hopefully I will also get back on track, because the current trend lines on my charts are discouraging to say the least.
