Whenever I am feeling down, at least I can console myself that I will probably never die by being crushed and suffocated by airtight expanding foam during a deep space hull breach event. So at least I've got that going for me.
Blake's 7: Space Fall
(Blake's 7 Wiki Recap)
With the second episode, we are still very much in series setup mode. Blake is being transported along with a ship full of other prisoners to the Cygnus Alpha penal colony. The captain of the ship seems like a nice enough guy, although still very much a Company Man. The second-in-command is a murdering sadistic bastard, and would clearly be a rapist as well given the opportunity. Nice guy. The transport is supposed to take eight months, so the ship is basically a floating prison in the interim.
Of course Blake stages a revolution, with the assistance of my new favorite character on the show: Kerr Avon.
This Guy
Genius computer expert, practical, sarcastic, and aloof - what's not to love? If Blake is the idealistic leader of the revolution, Avon is the cynical counterpoint.
So the evil second in command guy does a bunch of ruthless evil stuff, Blake stages a rebellion with Avon's help. lots of prisoners die in the process, and the rebellion fails because Blake is too nice to let more prisoners die. Avon is not impressed. Once the rebellion is quelled a giant and mysterious spaceship arrives, an apparent ghost ship with no crew. Given that it is the ship in the opening credits, and given that the episode ends with Blake, Jenna, and Avon in control of it, one presumes this is the infamous Liberator that will be the centerpiece of the rest of the series. Yay!
Oh, and the evil second in command guy gets jettisoned into space, so that's nice.
This show is off to a great start, I can easily see why it is so fondly revered by a great many fans. I am thoroughly enjoying it. Once again I am eager to get on the treadmill for the next episode, although that will probably be Thursday instead of tomorrow since I have a strength training workout tomorrow morning that will probably take up too much time to fit in an hour of cardio. I remain invigorated, and focused on fighting my way back below 260 by the end of the month. We'll see if I can keep up the momentum.
