One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Staying with you requires a degree of stupidity of which I no longer feel capable.

Staying with you requires a degree of stupidity of which I no longer feel capable.

Oh. Hey. I almost forgot about this place. Seriously, I have spent the last three months in rehearsal for a show that opened this past weekend, and frankly the final week of rehearsals plus the opening weekend performances exhausted me to the point I just couldn't do any workouts at all. The good news is, after missing ten days of this ridiculous project I expected to have ballooned up, but I actually only went up three pounds. Which, that is a little disappointed given how much progress I had made recently, but honestly I was overjoyed that it wasn't worse. So that's cool.

Since I last posted, I have also watched three more episodes of Blake's 7 on the Time Treadmill, so let's get to it.

Project Avalon

(Blake's 7 Wiki Recap)

Blake and crew go to rescue the titular Avalon, a young woman who is a leader in the resistance. Unfortunately, Travis is actually using her has bait. Stuff happens, some other stuff happens, Avalon gets strapped naked into a medical device, which conveniently has two strategically placed restraining straps, and she is replicated into an imposter robot. More stuff happens, there is a deadly virus, and then in the end Blake outwits Travis (of course)  and the real Avalon is rescued.

There's nothing especially surprising in the story, but on the whole it was enjoyable enough. I could have done without another Travis story immediately after the previous one, but whatever.

Breakdown

(Blake's 7 Wiki Recap)

Ah, now, this one I really enjoyed. One of the things about strongman Gan's character is that he has a limiter device implanted in his head that prevents him from actually killing anyone. It's a nifty plot device. In this episode, the limiter goes bad and starts sparking Gan into dangerous fits of rage. Also, the damage keeps increasing to the point where he will die if he does not receive competent medical attention. In order to get to the closest facility, the Liberator has to travel through a dangerous section of space with an unknown threat, and then once they arrive at the space station they have to deal with a reluctant surgeon. Also: Avon decides it is time for him to leave and go his own way.

So, lots of drama.

Paul Darrow gives a fantastic and nuanced performance, very believable in his reasons for leaving, and in the end equally believable in his reasons for staying after all. It doesn't feel like a cheap plot stunt in any way. This was a story that starts with a simple premise and then just continues to ratchet up the tension right until the end. This was certainly my favorite of the middle-season episodes so far, since the whole crew fell into place.

Bounty

(Blake's 7 Wiki Recap)

This story opens with a shot of Cally, and seriously my first reflexive thought was, "why did they make such a big point of her being a telepath in her first episode, and then never use it?" So you can imagine how pleased I was that literally five seconds later she used her ability in order to silently warn Blake about a security patrol she has spotted. The two of them are on a planetary mission to rescue (or abduct, depending on point of view) a retired politician. Meanwhile the Liberator encounters a ship in distress while waiting for said rescue mission to be completed. It turns out the guy they are coming to get is the former president of some planet, who lost a staged election seven years prior. He is unknowingly a puppet of the Federation. Meanwhile, and not surprisingly, the ship in distress turns out to actually be a pirate ship that successfully takes over the Liberator. Stuff happens, other stuff happens, Jenna seems to be a traitor and then really isn't, and then in the end the pirates are defeated and the ex-president is re-invigorated and returned to his planet.

It wasn't a bad story, per-se, but it definitely fell into the lower end of episodes for me. The action was predictable, and I never for a moment believed that Jenna was actually a turncoat. On the upside, there was some nice banter between Avon and Villa, and that's always a good thing.

As for me, I missed ten solid days on the treadmill, and took today at a pretty easy pace. Tomorrow I will notch it up a bit and try to get myself back in gear. I still feel largely good about where I am at, and am genuinely pleased that a week and a half off did not result in a massive setback. I expect tomorrow's story to be a real corker, given that it is the first half of a two-part season finale that leads to a shocking cliffhanger.  (I mean, it would be shocking if I didn't already know it was coming, but what can you do? It's a thirty year old show, I am bound to run into spoilers now and again.)
