What Does a Railway Station and a Submarine Have in Common?

What Does a Railway Station and a Submarine Have in Common?

Yesterday was a really frustrating day. I had a vexing code problem at work, a few other stresses, and I capped off the day by accidentally breaking the windshield on my wife's car while installing new wiper blades. It was not exactly my proudest moment. Today was much better. That vexing code problem? It turns out I was chasing a ghost. The code actually worked, the problem was with the tool I was using to examine it. It frustrates me that I lost six full hours to chasing that issue, but I am glad it at least got resolved. As for my wife's windshield, that will be replaced tomorrow and insurance is covering it with no deductible. I'm still embarrassed it happened, but at least it is taken care of. As for my workout today, I was able to sustain about another two minutes of running time beyond what I did yesterday. It is an incremental improvement, but an improvement none the less. My weigh in was good, my five day moving average crept down slightly, and I can almost see the downward slope at the end of that chart on the right without squinting. So it's all good. And as for chasing ghosts, I watched another episode of Sapphire & Steel during my workout. I didn't even have to wait two months to see it.

Sapphire & Steel: The Railway Station, Episodes 3 & 4

The main takeaways of these two episodes are that, in addition to the ghost from the Great War, there appear to also be several ghosts from the Second World War in residence at this creepy railway station. One of them is the pilot that trapped Steel in a vision at the end of yesterday's episode, a predicament from which he was rescued by Sapphire doing her Time Turner trick. Steel, being aggressive and action-oriented, tries to stir up the ghosts and almost gets everyone suffocated when he triggers a time slip vision in a sinking submarine. Said submarine was in sea trials in the late 30's, and crewed not by military sailors but instead by civilian workers who were lied to about the dangers and seaworthiness of the ship. Oops.

I guess that explains the hostility of the ghosts.

The other thing I am getting is that Tully, the only other live human in this story, and the amateur spiritualist who was investigating the railway station before Sapphire & Steel arrived... well, he might be more directly involved in the goings-on than previously thought. It appears that the ghostly activity started happening only after Tully first performed a solo seance two months previous. I am not sure yet whether he accidentally unleashed something, or whether he deliberately set things in motion. For that matter I am not 100% certain that he is not going to pull a Bruce Willis and turn out to have been dead all along. Quite a bit of emphasis was placed on Steel trying to get the name of the soldier who seems to be the ghostly ringleader, and my current guess is that he will turn out to either be Tully or else be directly related to him.

All of which is to say, this show continues to be magnificently creepy and atmospheric, and it is weird that I had never even heard of it before my friend recommended it to me. This is great stuff, and I have no  hesitation in recommending that you check it out even though I am only halfway through the first season.

And on that note I am off to bed. Tomorrow I have a dentist appointment, so my big challenge is going to be dragging myself out of bed early enough to get in my workout before I get my teeth cleaned. Wish me luck.
