One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

This morning I did 109 sit-ups, the first time I have done more than 100 sit-ups in a session since I left the army more than twenty five years ago. So that's pretty cool. Aside from that, I watched the very last appearance of the Brigadier in the Whoniverse (unless you count CyberBrig, which I most assuredly do not). That was simultaneously pretty cool and incredibly sad.

Usually when I title these posts, I pick my favorite line of dialog from the episode(s) I watched that day. At first I would always try to give the title some context in my post, but eventually I gave up on that as being more effort than it was worth. In any case, I had no trouble at all picking the title for this post, at the point where the Brig exasperatingly says, "Just once I'd like to meet an alien menace that wasn't immune to bullets..." As it turns out, I like that line so much that I picked it as the title for when I watched this episode the first time around. Oops. So instead I went with my second favorite bit of dialog, from the end of the story when the Doctor decides he is tired of UNIT and wants to scamper off and see the universe again.

So let's talk about that.

Oh, well, here we go again.

After eighteen solid months of being on the treadmill dang near every day, it's not especially surprising that I am not all that eager to hop back on after basically two weeks off. But here I am. I decided that, rather than jump right into the next spinoff (Torchwood), I am going to take some time to enjoy the recently-released BluRay of Tom Baker's fantastic first season as the Fourth Doctor. So I started in on a re-watch of Robot. So let's talk about that.

Happy International Women's Day

Happy International Women's Day

The BBC official Doctor Who twitter account sent out this amazing image today celebrating International Women's Day. They have done these in years past as well, but how cool is it to have Jodie Whittaker right there at the center if this year's photo? I also liked that they included the TARDIS in the photo, because she is definitely a woman as well. In other upcoming news, I saw today that Alan Cumming is going to be appearing in an episode of the new series as King James I. How cool is that?

In other news, I watched the rest of Battlefield this morning, but I don't have much to say about it. Let's get it done.

The Five (But Really Only Four) Doctors

The Five (But Really Only Four) Doctors

Good lord, what a long day. For the past eleven months I have been watching two 25-minute episodes per day, but this morning's viewing was the twentieth anniversary special that is effectively a movie with no breaking point. That meant that I spent a full 102 minutes on the treadmill, walking further than I ever have in a single day. Then I had a full day of work, and then a big birthday party. Aside from being Alexander Hamilton's birthday, today is my wife's birthday (and also my boss' birthday, and also a friend's birthday), plus my own birthday is on Monday. So we had a whole big thing planned for tonight. Unfortunately my wife has the flu and couldn't go out, but we filmed everyone singing to her. After that I had to go back to work to do a software release, and so now here I am at nearly midnight just finally writing this post.

So let's talk about the big twentieth anniversary special.

You've got to come out onto the balcony sometimes and wave a tentacle

Yesterday was a miserable day. I mean, not nearly as miserable as the time a year ago that I had a severe bout of diverticulitis and ended up in the hospital, but still pretty miserable. I spent most of the day with a roaring headache, which I am sure that my (admittedly lethargic) workout did not help. Although I succeeded in what ching the first half of Terror of the Zygons it was mostly at a stumbling stroll and I barely walked 2 1/2 miles. Today was much better, though, I was back up to just one notch below my top speed and clocked in at just over four miles while finishing the story.

Let's talk about that.

Just once I'd like to meet an alien menace that wasn't immune to bullets

It was a rough day today. My wife and I stayed out way too late on a weeknight, but all in service to help prepare for and promote a show I am doing in a few weeks. The upshot, though, was that neither of us got enough sleep last night, and I definitely felt it on the treadmill this morning. On top of that, we are still wafting for an initial evaluation of the damage done to our house by Hurricane Irma. We almost certainly need a new roof, and that's not going to be cheap. But still, things could be worse. We weren't injured, we didn't suffer any catastrophic property damage, and we didn't have to face down a giant robot bent on the destruction of all humanity.

Speaking of which, let's talk about that.

You may be *a* Doctor, but I'm *the* Doctor. The definite article, you might say.

Have you ever been apart from someone for so long that you have forgotten that you even miss them? And then, all of a sudden, there they are again and the years melt away like you have never even been apart? After nearly seven months of continuous daily viewing of Doctor Who, I finally got to meet Tom Baker again for the first time and it was magical.

Let's talk about that.
