One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

The Damn Daleks are Dead

The Damn Daleks are Dead

I only had one 24 minute episode to watch this morning, the final part of The Evil of the Daleks, so I cut my treadmill time a little short today. Frankly, I spent all afternoon yesterday walking around Epcot with my son meeting princesses, and I was pretty walked out. Sure enough, I weighed in two pounds lighter today than yesterday, despite my shortened workout this morning. I won't be surprised tomorrow when I bounce back up a little. As for Doctor Who, this stupid Dalek story is finally over.

Let's talk about that.

The Evil of the Daleks - Episode 7

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

I complain a lot about Dalek stories, but I will at least say that this one had a decent enough finale. The Daleks intend to infect humanity with the Dalek Factor, but instead the Doctor manages to infect several Daleks with the Human Factor instead. This leads to the questioning of orders, which then leads to open rebellion, which eventually leads to a massive internecine battle that destroys every single Dalek in existence - thus freeing up Terry Nation to (unsuccessfully) shop around a Dalek television series in the United States.

I was correct in my expectation that Victoria's father would die. By the end of the story, the Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria are the only three living sentient beings remaining on the planet Skaro. Victoria's father sacrificed himself to protect the Doctor from a Dalek blast, and in return the Doctor pledged to take care of Victoria.

Of the six Dalek stories that aired during the first four years, I would rank them as follows:

  1. The Dalek Invasion of Earth - truly superior
  2. The Daleks - a great origin story
  3. The Power of the Daleks - a good, tight adventure
  4. The Daleks' Master Plan - over long, but not awful, and Brett Vyon & Sara Kingdom were great
  5. The Evil of the Daleks - overly padded, over long, decent ending
  6. The Chase - awful, truly wretchedly awful, with no redeeming values whatsoever

So here we are, the end of the Daleks for the next five years. Instead, we have the Cybermen lined up to take their place as the over-used enemy. And yet, somehow, I never get tired of the Cybermen the way I do with the Daleks. Certainly I am really looking forward to tomorrow's new story, The Tomb of the Cybermen. In fact, it is possibly my all-time favorite story of the Second Doctor's era. I will be jumping right onto the treadmill first thing tomorrow morning.
