One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Just in Time for Thanksgiving

I set a new record low weight today. Yay! Also today: my wife spent all day prepping and cooking for tomorrow's big meal. I have a sneaking suspicion that my weight will be going up on Friday...

I also finished the my current Doctor Who story, but don't have much to say about it.

The Creature from the Pit - Parts 3 & 4

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

Look: it's late, and I just finished a grueling rehearsal for the show I am in that opens in three days. I don't have anything enlightened to say. The gist fo the back half of the story is that the titular Creature is actually an ambassador from another planet, from a race that needs chlorophyll to survive. It came to this planet to try to arrange a trade deal, delivering vast quantities of metal for chlorophyll. Unfortunately, the first person the ambassador met was the evil Lady Adrasta who held a monopoly on metal worldwide, and who summarily tossed the creature into the pit rather than lose her power and wealth. I the end the Doctor helps free the creature, the evil Lady Adrasta gets crushed to death, and the trade deal gets set up after all. Oh, and there is a late-story surprise involving a runaway neutron star, which comes out of nowhere and which the creature helps the Doctor to divert.. Yay!

Overall it's not a bad story. Not great, but not awful. It just kinda sits there and does its thing (with lots of phallic undertones for no apparent reason). I was not surprised at all to read that this was the first story to actually be produced for the season even though it aired third. Romana's costume seemed like something Mary Tamm would have worn, and didn't suit Lalla Ward at all. Similarly, the character was a step backwards -- especially after the amazing City of Death.

Tomorrow: A Very Special Episode with a strong anti-drug message. This aught to be fun.
