One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Shot Through the Heart, and You're to Blame

Shot Through the Heart, and You're to Blame

Today has been an extremely satisfying day. After missing two days of treadmilling last week due to being sick, and another day this week due to being buried between work and my show, today my weight dropped back under 250 again. I expect the moving average to drop back below it tomorrow. I also built some really cool software stuff at work today, and then had an excellent performance of Annie tonight with a full house. All in all a good day.

I also finished watching the current vampire story, so let's talk about that.

State of Decay - Parts 3 & 4

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

One of the things that made the first half of the story so enjoyable was that Adric was barely in it. Sadly, he has much more screen time in the second half, and he spends most of that time being an annoying git. At one point he just straight-up accepts the offer to become a vampire on the premise that the other option is to die, so he may as well become a monster. He just casually assumes that the Doctor is going to cut and run, and he is perfectly comfortable with Romana dying as long as he lives. It's not like it's a ploy to lull the bad guys into trusting him, he is just a self-centered dick.

As for the Doctor, he figures out that all vampire legends throughout the universe stem from the same race of intergalactic blood-suckers. It turns out that the great time lord Rassilon himself battled the vampires and defeated them all, except one escaped to e-space and has been sleeping beneath the spaceship/castle ever since while the three rulers gradually brought him back to life. The doctor also figures out that the way you kill a giant vampire is to launch a spaceship straight up, then have it fall back down pointy-bit first and spear the monster though the heart.

In the end the Doctor announces that he is taking Adric back to where he belongs. We should be so lucky. No, I am stuck watching this stupid character for a couple more weeks until his blissful demise. It can't come soon enough.

On the whole, though, it was still quite a good story despite the annoying sidekick. Plenty of gothic thrills and chills, and a rousing ending. One fewer companion and it would have been nearly perfect.
