One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

We're Living in Escher's World

In no particular order, today:  I set a new record low for my weight, just below 245 lbs, so my target of getting below 240 before my birthday next month seems do-able; the show I am in is now sold out for the remainder of its run, with seven performances remaining; I am now on vacation until the second of January, and I was able to clear out my entire bug list  before going, with one exception, so I feel pretty darn good about that (especially since we did a really cool software release last night, with some work of which I am very proud); and, oh yeah, I finished watching the first Fifth Doctor story.

So let's talk about that.

Castrovalva - Parts 3 & 4

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

The back of the story takes place almost entirely within the walls of the titular city of Castrovalva. The denizens seem very nice, and are very well educated, but they live in a place that seems to be modeled directly after an MC Escher drawing. In fact, the Doctor eventually notices that the geometry itself is crazy within the town. There is a nifty scene in which he asks one of the citizens to draw a map of the general layout, and then asks them where a particular location. They point to four spots on the map that all relate to the single destination. It turns out they are trapped inside a Recursive Occlusion, a trap sprung by the Master using Wesley Crusher's Adric's mathematical skills plus an application of Block Transfer Computation. It's a really cool concept, done very well.

Of course in the end the Doctor does a Very Clever Thing in order to defeat the Master, and to free Adric. By the end of the story the Doctor is finally fully recovered from his regeneration, and ready to tackle new adventures with his new companions.

I was definitely a fan of having Adric locked away as a tortured prisoner of the Master for nearly the entire duration of the story.

And at 12:30 in the morning, I don't have anything else to say about today's viewing. With two performances of my show tomorrow, I expect tomorrow's post will be brief as well.
