One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Ah, the Boy Who Got His Sums Wrong

Ah, the Boy Who Got His Sums Wrong

In lieu of saying something pithy or relevant today, I think Cyanide and Happiness has summed up my weight loss journey pretty well with this recent short:

Oh, I also started watching a new Doctor Who story today, so let's talk about that.

Four to Doomsday - Parts 1 & 2

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

The crux of this story is that Wesley Crusher Adric can't fly the TARDIS worth a crap, and manages to land them on an alien spacecraft instead of at London Heathrow where Tegan needs to get to in order to not lose her freaking job. Also: Just like the last time around, he is willing to betray the Doctor and the other companions at the drop of a hat, because he's a stupid petulant child young and inexperienced.  It is worth noting at this point that he will also be dead a week from Monday, and I couldn't be happier about that fact.

The spacecraft is run by three Urbankans (aliens who look like bipedal frogs) named Monarch, Enlightenment, and Persuasion. Their race has visited the Earth several times and taken human representatives with them from various ancient cultures including Aboriginals from Australia (because Doctor Who was extremely popular Down Under at the time -- the same reason Tegan was brought aboard as a companion), someone from Ancient Greece, a Mayan, and a Chinese mandarin. Who all turn out to be robots, because of course.

Also: the ship is four days away from Earth, and although the Doctor doesn't know it yet the Monarch intends to invade and conquer, replacing humanity with his own race of survivors from their now-dead planet. So, awkward.

Honestly, this isn't that great of a story. It's not awful, but it is also not nearly as inventive as the last several have been. Where Logopolis and Castrovalva played around with perception and the nature of reality, this story just kind of... is. Even worse, Wesley Crusher Adric gets a lot of screen time, and that's never a good idea. That's ok, I tell myself, because he'll be dead in a week. On Christmas Day. Glory and Hallelujah, I am getting the perfect present!
