As of about an hour ago, I have walked over one thousand miles on the treadmill since starting this ridiculous project. How amazing is that? My feelings are best summed up by David Tennant and the cast & crew of Doctor Who:
Also, I watched the first half of Kinda, so let's talk about that.
Kinda - Parts 1 & 2
(TARDIS Data Core recap)
Right off the bat in this story, Nyssa falls down with a terrible case of "not existing when the script was written", and has to take a four episode nap in the TARDIS to recover from this dreadful malady. In the meantime, The Doctor and Wesley Crusher Adric get wrapped up in some good old-fashioned British Space Colonialism, while Tegan takes a long nap and has creepy snake dreams. Seriously, the female companions in this story really get the short end of the stick.
They are on a paradise planet with an indigenous culture who, if they were blue monkeys, would totally be Na'vi. Given the practicalities of a 1981 BBC television budget, however, the titular Kinda (rhymes with Linda [a.k.a. the London Investigation 'N Detective Agency, but we won't get there for several more months]) just look like standard Native Americans. Meanwhile, a military expedition of humans is evaluating the planet for possible colonization. Unfortunately, most of the original crew has disappeared. The three remaining humans consist of a guy who may as well be a Gilbert & Sullivan Modern Major General, another guy who is completely off his rocker and thinks the trees are plotting against them, and then a sensible non-military female scientist. Naturally, the Modern Major General goes off on an expedition, leaving the crazy dude in charge, and everything goes to hell.
Oh, and hey, for those readers who happen to be my wife: This story totally features a nine-year-old Jonny Lee Miller, of Elementary fame.
This kid is totally gonna be Sherlock one day...
I genuinely like this story. Yes, the snake effect in the big finale is pretty dire, due to production issues, but that's ok. It is a story with big ideas and cultural awareness. To me it really represents some of the best of what Doctor Who aspires to be. Even Adric isn't too terribly annoying in this one.
