One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Four Things and a Lizard

It's late. Like, really really late. I need to be asleep about forty five minutes ago, so here we go on a quick one.

Yes, I hit the treadmill today. so let's talk about it.

The Hungry Earth

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

The Doctor is supposed to be taking Amy and Rory to Rio for some beach time, but winds up in Cwmtaff, Wales instead in the year 2020. That's not a typo, btw, the Welsh just have a particular love of consonants. Anyway, Amy makes a big scene about how she is dressed for Rio but honestly she doesn't look like she dressed any differently than any other day. That girl would visit Ice Station Zebra wearing a mini-skirt and stockings. Of course the place where they have arrived is currently experience some Mysterious Things all centered around the giant drilling station, so off they go to investigate.

Amy gets sucked into the Earth down a mysterious dirt pit, and the Doctor promises Rory that he will rescue her. Also, the father of an annoying dyslexic young boy was also sucked into the Earth, and the Doctor promises the boy that he will rescue the father as well. And then, um... the dyslexic boy gets sucked into the Earth, and the Doctor promises the mother that he will rescue the boy. I mean, seriously, roughly two-thirds of this episode is the Doctor promising to rescue an increasing number of sinkhole victims.

It turns out that the whole crisis is the result of the giant drill threatening a Silurian community deep underground, kicking off a war with the Silurians defending themselves from their perceived human invaders. Frankly, they ain't wrong.

Long-time readers will remember that the last time the Silurians appeared back in Warriors of the Deep, it included a giant pantomime horse Myrka facing off against a Russian woman who tries to defeat it with the worst karate moves ever:

Fortunately, both special effects and budgets have improved dramatically since 1984, so the new Silurians actually look amazing. As much as I joke about the Doctor's repeated rescue promises, this is actually a pretty decent base-under-siege story and very much in the mode of Classic Who except with decent sets and costumes. The scene where Amy gets dragged into the Earth is harrowing. As is usual with Silurian stories, the whole thing hinges on the Homo Reptilius (correctly) assuming that humans will just generally be pretty awful given any opportunity. It's good stuff.

I just hope Rory doesn't die (again) tomorrow, because that would be awful.
