One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Oh My God, They Killed Rory! Again.

Oh My God, They Killed Rory! Again.

I'm definitely not sick anymore. This morning I finally weighed back in at under 250, which was a huge relief. I know, I know, weight is not what this ridiculous project is about, it's about feeling good about myself physically and mentally, and I keep reminding myself about that fact. But my brain fixates on charts and numbers, and I haven't liked the chart, so here we are. I know it's irrational. That's ok, though, this whole project is crazy.

Speaking of this ridiculous project, Rory died today (spoilers!). It's ok, though. He's died before and he will die again. It's just kind of what he does. So let's talk about that.

Cold Blood

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

The back half of this story hinges on the Doctor trying to forge a peaceful coexistence between the Silurians and the Humans, very much like his previous attempts. Unfortunately, as per usual those plans are derailed on the human side when Mother of the Year straight-up murders the Silurian hostage, and on the Silurian side when the warrior leader awakens squadrons of troops in order to launch a full-scale war against humanity. In both cases, it is the racist and short-sighted actions of one individual that poisons the well for any peaceful negotiations.

Ultimately most of the Silurians are put back into suspended animation to await another thousand years before attempting to broker another peace accord. As for the humans, they mostly all escape to the surface. Except for Rory, who gets shot by the warrior Silurian and then as he is dying he is touched by another one of the cracks in the universe. This leads to him being wiped out of existence entirely, such that Amy does not even remember him to grieve. How sad, in its lack of sadness. I remember what a gut-punch it was when it first aired.

Oh, also, the Doctor fishes around inside the crack looking for shrapnel, which leads to the discovery that the TARDIS is intimately involved in the explosion that caused / will cause the cracks throughout time and space. Oops. I bet that was some Big Bang (see what I did there?)

Can I just say how amazing the prosthetics are for this story? The Silurians look amazing, all scaly and reptilian and yet still full of expression and nuance. The makeup designers truly outdid themselves for this one.

I am really looking forward to the next two days. Tomorrow is the Vincent Van Gogh episode, and the day after that is the James Corden episode. Both are favorites of mine, and it will be a treat to revisit them. Yay!
