One fat geek's SUCCESSFUL attempt to regenerate into a not-so-fat geek by watching the entirety of Doctor Who while walking on a treadmill

Farewell, Romana and K9

Farewell, Romana and K9

I actually got to sleep in a bit today, which was nice. Then I hit the treadmill for an hour, go cleaned up, and went and did a performance of my show. It was a special one for me, a Sensory Friendly performance specifically for autistic persons and their caregivers, and my son was in the audience. It was pretty dang cool. Now I"ve got about thirty minutes before I need to go back to do the evening show.

So that gives me enough time to talk about today's viewing.

Warriors' Gate - Parts 3 & 4

(TARDIS Data Core recap)

There was a fair bit of timey-wimey stuff in this story, and a revelation that the race of creatures presently being held as slaves were once masters in their own right, holding human slaves. This race, the Tharil, are time-sensitives who are able to navigate through this weird nexus between E-Space and N-Space, and they are now held as slaves to become navigators on human spaceships.

Naturally, by the end of the story the Doctor has helped free the present batch of Tharil slaves, but there are many more still held prisoner throughout E-Space. That is the point where Romana makes the surprising decision to stay behind and help free the rest of the Tharil, with the help of K9. She does this partially because she believes in the cause, and partially because she simply does not want to return to Gallifrey - which she knows she will be compelled to do if she ever returns to N-Space. And so, with that, the Doctor says goodbye to two perfectly helpful and interesting companions, and travels away with Wesley Crusher Adric. It's such a waste.

That being said, Adric had very little to do or say in this story, so that was ok in my book. It felt a bit weird and cheap in places, some of which I think was budget but most of which I think was from all of the behind-the-scenes drama playing out. On the whole, though, I enjoyed it. I don't know that I had ever seen it before.

The next two, however, I very much remember and I am looking forward to revisiting them. Tomorrow and Monday I get Nyssa. Tuesday and Wednesday I get Tegan. And then, on Thursday, I finally reach the Fifth Doctor. I will have spent a staggering 92 days on the 4th Doctor, and it will be more than a little weird to see him go.
